Many of these stones are NOT listed in the cemetery books.-Teresa

I recieved the following from Wanda Sory: When I visited the Cemetery two years ago there were a couple of men cleaning it up (this was winter two years ago). They told us that the graves outside the main fence of the cemetery was those of slaves. I don’t know what type of condition they are in because after that I broke my leg in six places and was out of commission for seven months on crutches. And I have not gotten back up there to look at it. Thought you might be interested in that. I don’t know if they cleaned up that part of the cemetery or now or if they took the fence down and made it one complete cemetery. I wasn’t even sure if it was in any condition for you to know that there were graves outside the main cemetery. Wanda

We did not see these graves when we photographed, so they may have removed the fence and this was the stones we saw in the very back that were marked stay out.-Teresa

β€œThe illegible tombstone pictured after the "Infant Haynes" tombstone and before the "J. W. and Tommie L. Haynes" tombstone is for my great-great-great grandparents, Thomas Lowe Hendrix born December 5, 1817 and died February 28, 1902 and his wife, Elizabeth (Prince) Hendrix born March 12, 1818 and died June 30, 1895.  Their single illegible tombstone is inclosed in a wire fence around their graves.   The original words on their stones were readable several years ago and reads:  "T. L. & E. Hendrix" under his name was his age "age 84 yr. 4 m. 22 da"  Inscribed under her name was her age, "age 77 yr. 4m. 17da."

Notice that I am not wearing snake shoes?  Mistake. Mistake, Mistake.  :)  He was only about 6 foot long and asleep at the base of one of these tombstones.  Luckily for me, he was asleep.  It was incredibly hot that day, and he must have been a little dehydrated.  Soon after this picture was taken, I got snake boots. πŸ™‚

Lots of unmarked and probably snake ridden graves are under these trees.  There were stones leaning against piles of rocks .  There was a sign on the tree in the middle warning visitors not to proceed past that point, and Jeff and I are good at obeying signs. πŸ™‚

As you will see in later photos, this is NOT a cemetery you want to spend a great deal of time in rubbing stones.  It is very grown up and the stones are very hard to read.

As you can see this cemetery is in BAD need of some cleaning.  It is heavily grown up with blackberry vines.  Believe it or not, we saw no snakes here.  :)  But with all that growth, that doesn’t mean they weren’t there. 😦
