#4 Batey Cemetery

Posted on Updated on

Rockvale Quadrangle

1 1/4 miles west of Beasley Lane on the north edge of Franklin Pke on the north edge of Franklin Pike are two markers.

Photographed by  Margie Augustine margieaugustine@earthlink.net

Margie writes:  We drove all over Rutherford County on Saturday looking for  4 Batey Cemeteries.  We could only find the one on Waldron Road.  As with many old cemeteries, neighborhoods are springing up all around these treasured old sites.

I’m not giving up on finding the other cemeteries.  We will go back in a few weeks and try to find the others.

We did get into the areas where maps show these cemeteries:

Franklin Pike/Murfreesboro Road – There is a new subdivision right next to where map shows Batey Cemetery to be.  Neighbors had not heard of an old cemetery near.  Could not get access to old farmhouse next to neighborhood.  Will try again at another time.

Rockvale Hwy 96 – ran out of time to find this one…will get on next trip.

Cemetery book lists:

I am curious, there is a cemetry on Windrow–Hwy96 from Murfreesobor take left at lights down Rucker Road/right onto Old Salem-right on Windrow, on main street on left side-between Middleton rd and Waltherleather rd. In front yard.

There is another small plot in the back of the New Salem–Salem Close subd. Follow Middleton to end at four way stop take left onto Hampden/right on All saints/right on Constintine(sic) some where on the right down that road. I live in New Salem and are curious who the people are who own this land.

The cemetery on Franklin road is in the weeds at the place where Royal Glen Subdivision’s white fence ends(on the west sideof subd.) Captain Batey’s grave must be on private property of one of the houses on Shores rd.
